An Agreement Between Surfaces and Gardens
At this Mequon residence, the homeowner wanted a large, multi‑area patio with distinct zones for entertaining and everyday enjoyment, so we transformed the backyard into a cohesive outdoor living environment with layered functional spaces. Anchoring the design is a Heartland pergola paired with a Belgard Bristol™ fireplace, creating a warm and inviting focal point for gatherings. Adjacent to this, a built‑in serving island was framed with Belgard Tandem® Walls in Shelby Blend, offering both practical prep space and visual continuity throughout the hardscape.
From the main patio, a set of steps leads down to a cozy gas firepit area — ideal for casual evenings and relaxed conversation. Another staircase leading from the home descends to a lower patio with direct basement access, constructed with Belgard Landings™ Step units in Midnight and embraced by Belgard Tandem® Walls in Shelby Blend. These steps provide structural support while creating smooth, functional transitions between levels. Belgard Landings™ Step units, with their quarried-limestone appearance, add a refined and durable finish to the connecting walkways.
The primary patio field was paved with Belgard Dimensions™ 12 pavers in Danville Beige, selected for their clean, contemporary lines and smooth surface ideal for large entertaining areas. A Belgard Brooklyn™ border in Midnight frames the patio, providing crisp contrast and refined edges that define each space with precision.
Throughout the landscape, grey slate decorative stone and thoughtfully arranged plantings bring depth, color, and seasonal interest to the outdoor rooms, enhancing each area with texture and botanical richness. From sweeping entertaining spaces to intimate gathering spots, this project blends purposeful layout, quality materials, and thoughtful transitions to create a backyard retreat that meets both practical needs and aesthetic goals.
